MARCH
2007 Underrated
Truth
Sometimes we ignore Truth. Generally, we lull ourselves content by remaining unaware and/or unconscious. Occasionally
we flat out deny truth. And then, truth’s unnerving boldness bowls
over our sorry little story along with our crumbling excuse. Who hasn’t whitewashed truth with blame…or covered it up with bullshit? No matter our tactics or motives, we have all under utilized truth at some point. Then opportunity has taught us a few things:
Generations of philosophers, prophets and scientists have weighed in on truth. Revolutionary, U.S. Architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1887 to 1959) or (1867-1959) told us that, “The truth is more important than the facts.” In A Thousand Names for Joy, Byron Katie writes “Truth is the power that sets us free.” According to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, “There is no single definition of truth about which the majority of scholars agree, and many theories of truth continue the debate. Additionally, a common dictionary definition of truth is ‘agreement with fact or reality’.” So
even in all my admiration of these clarifying distinctions what comes
at me more solidly than wanting to define the meaning of truth is an
inquiry into truth’s affect once it is applied. I invite you then
to join me in directing these question to self and see what rings up
for you: What if our strength, our untouchable gift to this earth, is to be true? What if part of our destiny is to channel truth and its healing optimism into the world? What would happen to conflicts, small and great, if we just surrendered to being brilliantly honest? If truth always defeats what is in its way, how come so many of us still get run over? What if we loved truth more than we loved saving and fixing those around us? What measure of empathy and compassion would there be then? What
if we stepped fearlessly up to what truth is calling us to do? What
would we stand for, and what would we not?
