Are You A Chicken? |
|||||||
| Are you a chicken? I borrowed this story from the book Orbiting the Giant Hairball. Read it and see what you think. “The summer of 1904 found a city boy taking an extended vacation on the farm of his aunt and uncle. It so happened that the aunt and uncle had a son the same age as this boy. When the two youngsters were together, they were full of mischief. One Sunday, they feigned stomachaches and were excused from going to church. The Uncle and the Aunt hitched up the horse to a carriage and took off to worship. As soon as they were out of site, the two ten-year-olds went looking for something to do. Do you know how to mesmerize a chicken? asked the cousin. Mesmerize? Uh-uh. What’s that? asked the city boy. Follow me. The cousin led the way to a ramshackle chicken coop and selected a fine white hen. He produced a piece of chalk and drew a short line on the big front porch of the house. He stood the hen over the chalk line, held her beak to it, and after a few moments he slowly removed his hand. The chicken stood motionless, beak to the chalk line, hypnotized. The boys hooted with glee and ran back to the coop for another chicken. And another. And another. Soon the hen house was empty and the front porch was filled with 70 or so dead-silent, stark-still chickens all straddling chalk lines, beaks seemingly glued to the porch. About that time the soft thud of horse and carriage rippled upon the breeze announcing the return of the Aunt, Uncle. Upon seeing the fowl foolery the Uncle flew into a rage. He leapt off the carriage and bounded onto the porch, place-kicking chicken after chicken back to consciousness. Feathers and clucking filled the air, frightening each hen back to reality.” The same thing that happened to the chickens in this story can happen to people. We get hypnotized by organizations, trains of thought and theory. We often join groups or embrace beliefs that mesmerize us. At any given time, in some little porch of our minds, we could be focused on a line. Lines often tell us: “This is our history, our philosophy, our tradition and these are our policies and procedures. This is simply how we are and you should not move from this line of thought. ” Right now in this article, I give you permission to look around and see if you’ve been focused on a line. All of us could be holding at least one paradigm that no longer serves us. See if your head has been pushed toward something that you need to walk away from this very day. We don’t have to be chickens.
